Not at all - it's a well-established truism that Americans prefer sedans over hatchbacks and wagons, they prefer large, torquey engines (usually V6 or V8), and they prefer lots of car for cheap as opposed to a smaller, higher-quality car.
Though cars are being kept longer these days than in the past, Americans tend to dispose of their cars at a greater rate than, say, in Europe. So it makes sense that cheaper build quality is more viable when the car is not expected to last forever.
Will be interesting to see if VW survives the Americanization of their car line. One of the tings I saw last year was that they are going to make their new cars feel more like what Americans are used to driving. The whole notion that Europeans drive smaller cars because their streets are narrow is partially myth. Don't forget - Europe has modern cities with divided highways too, just like the US does. It is true that many cities and towns in Europe are more compact because of their age (Americans who live in certain parts of Boston or Philadelphia will be familiar with what 17th century streets look like). But the smaller size of cars in Europe is more closely related to the austerity of the post-WWII years setting a standard of smaller cars, fuel prices being higher, and higher taxes for larger cars.
Sat in the new Passat at the NAIAS this weekend because of this thread. Its a nice car, roomy, comfortable, kind of "mean" looking on the outside. I liked it.
I won't be able to look at one in the flesh till they hit dealers. The success of the new Passat will depend on how many new buyers Volkswagen lures, since that was the purpose of the "decontenting".
As an aside, I wish they'd bring the Golf GTD over here. I would be strongly tempted to buy one.

That's not necessarily true. Stores routinely sell items at a loss to draw people into the store to buy other things. Those kinds of items are called "Loss Leaders". Soft drinks are another example of a typical loss leader for grocery stores.
Unauthorized selling of premium products is called "diversion" in the industry. Many of my clients make premium hair products that are supposed to only be sold in high-end salons that have a special relationship with that producer. Companies like Aveda and Sebastian don't want to see their products in, say, Target because it cheapens their image and weakens the cache salons have to exclusively offer those products and educate the client on how to use the product. Often, the products in retail stores are old versions, rejects and downright fake copies of the real thing and when people aren't happy with the product, it casts a bad light on the brand. Companies spend a lot of time and money tracking down the people who are making back alley deals to the retail stores and cutting off their supplies.

Nope. It is true. Warranty from date of manufacture from non authorized retailer. Seen a couple threads with angry people because of this. Apple took the date of manufacture because the buyer bought from ebay.
Well, they are $100 cheaper...

Up for sale is an Xbox 360 Core, still sealed, UK PAL. I will ship the the UK, and the UK only. It is currently on eBay here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8240818983). The right offer here (I realise my Buy it now price in the auction isn't realistic) wins it, and I will cancel the auction. Alternatively, you can bid the in auction. As the saying goes, if you don't think its worth it then don't buy it.
Me, my .mac account is up for renewal and this makes me glad to pay for another year. I like my .mac email address, I like the seamless synchronisation between my two macs and don't have a problem (yet) with the current size.
That said, I welcome any improvements to the service.

thats an intense background and i really like the dock icons but how do you know which is which? and where did you get them?

That is false. Even lawyers agree that 100% certainty is impossible. That is why we have the term "reasonable doubt". The 5 men wrongly sentenced to death in Ohio went through what was supposed to be an exceptionally thorough legal process, yet it still failed them.

What I mean is that people captured as part of the "war on terrorism" should be treat as you would treat prisoners of war and should not be tortured under any circumstances.
But the whole point is that in a "regular" war, we are far more likely to capture regular grunts or low level officers who have limited intelligence to provide.
Don't you think capturing KSM, who was one of the leaders of Al Qaeda is very different ? The guy obviously knows a great deal, and obviously will not easily divulge that information.

Unfortunately, due to reality, there are fewer young workers relative to the number of retirees to keep the system afloat. Unless a miracle occurs, Social Security will eventually collapse just like any Ponzi Scheme.

i've sort of dismissed the iphone rumors in past, but the ichat connection makes it sound like something that could well be and soon. but the wifi phone sounds like an effort to build up ichat. why not?
I've never been able to understand how a WiFi phone could be a success before WiFi networks become pervasive and virtually free. How could you use a WiFi phone in your car, for instance? And what's the point of having iChat on your phone when you can only use it in the currently few and limited WiFi-enabled areas?
